White Outlined Abstract Forms On Orange Mola

Tall white outlined forms rise from the bottom edge of this orange panel and curve in toward a central shape holding a spotted teal medallion. Small inset panels of pink, green, blue and black are dropped into the design like windows, each one filled with stitched marks. One of the forms carries a single eye, which gives the abstract shapes a quiet animal feel. At 13 inches wide and 10.5 inches high, this is a compact panel that works well in a small frame. It is hand cut and stitched in reverse appliqué.

A mola is a hand stitched panel made by the Guna people of Panama, once known as the Kuna. Several layers of colored cotton are stacked, then cut down through one layer at a time so the colors underneath show through, and every raw edge is turned and stitched closed by hand. The technique is called reverse appliqué. Guna women have been refining it for generations, and the designs draw on the birds, fish, plants and geometric patterns of the islands and rainforest where they live.
