Two Headed Bird In Lime Outline On Black Mola

One body, two heads. This panel shows a single bird form that splits into two beaked heads looking in opposite directions, its back ridged with rows of orange, pink, blue and cream stripes. A lime green outline traces the whole creature, and two dark leaves with stitched veins anchor the lower corners against the black ground. At 16 inches wide and 10.5 inches high, it is a wide, low shape that suits a mantel or a long wall. All hand cut and stitched in reverse appliqué.

A mola is a hand stitched panel made by the Guna people of Panama, once known as the Kuna. Several layers of colored cotton are stacked, then cut down through one layer at a time so the colors underneath show through, and every raw edge is turned and stitched closed by hand. The technique is called reverse appliqué. Guna women have been refining it for generations, and the designs draw on the birds, fish, plants and geometric patterns of the islands and rainforest where they live.
